Regarding the positions in the search engines there are a lot of mistakes people make. One of these mistakes is website owners are desperate to be number one in the search engine results. Not an suprising wish. The number one gets most of the clicks so of course you want te be number one. But sometimes its better to target on a lower number.
Lets take for example a Porsche dealer. He deals with second hand Porsche cars and wants to promote his website in the search engines. He finds out every month there are about 30.000 hits on Porsche and decides to give his webdeveloper the task to put him on number one.
But this website owner makes a mistake. He must consider what the websurfers are looking for when they search for Porsche. Are all these visitors searching for a second hand Porsche or are they just interested in the car brand? Which cars does he want to sell which are available.
In that case its better to specify your target. Suppuse he has a Porsche 911 build in 1978. He must consider its very well possible some potantial customers are specifically looking for a 1978 model. This can be for many reasons. for example, I know one guy he wanted to buy a Porsche build in the year he was married and wanted to give this car as a present to his wife.
In this case its not needed to be number one in the results. You can specify your target on the keywords “Porsche 911 1978” and make your title and description as clear as possible so this will be visible in the searh results.
When a potential customer is surfing the internet for this model your link will pay attention to this potential buyer. No matter if you’re on number one or on number 5 position.
In this case no need to target for the number one position.
Another example is a website owner dealing in LED lights. A quick overview tells there are thousands of searches every month for these lights. To get the number one position will be very hard and will surely cost a lot also. However, a more specific search gives better possibilies to get on number one. For example for the keyword “LED lights China”. Now, this owner has to consider his strategy also. Suppose the keyword “LED light China” gives 500 hits every month and “LED lights” gives 30.000 hits every month.
A simple calculation tells the number 1 position gives 35% of the hits of those 500. Thats 175. The 30.000 hits for LED light gives a lower percentage when your position is number 5. This percentage is average 5%. Over 30.000 hits 5% is 1.500 hits for this website. So in this case you get more hits on the number 5 position as on the number one position.
Its not a straight law but its very wise to consider these facts before you make as a website owner the decision to optimize your site and spend a lot of costs.
